Tummy Tuck Recovery
After a tummy tuck procedure, patients can expect to resume light activities within one week and return to work one to three weeks later. However, the extent and timeline of your tummy tuck recovery will ultimately depend upon the complexity of your procedure, and whether or not you received liposuction as well. At Robles Plastic Surgery in Phoenix, AZ, a patient liaison will follow each patient from consultation through recovery to ensure high quality care throughout treatment. In addition, board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ramon Robles, personally examines each patient during every follow-up visit to ensure a smooth recovery.
Your Recovery Plan
During your initial consultation, Dr. Robles can thoroughly evaluate your medical history to minimize potential risks and complications. Taking into account your lifestyle and preferences, he can create a plan to help you achieve a more comfortable recovery. We may recommend that you:
- Refrain from smoking at least two weeks before undergoing a procedure
- Consume a healthy diet and maintain as close to an ideal weight as possible
- Discontinue the use of birth control two weeks before surgery
- Discontinue any medications and supplements that may cause increased bleeding or impede healing
In your examination prior to your surgery, Dr. Robles can ensure you are properly prepared and provide you with detailed post-operative instructions that may include:
- How to care for your drains and surgical site
- Prescribed medications
- Medications to avoid, such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatories
- How to wear your compression garment for improved comfort and reduced swelling
- When to attend follow-up appointments
Due to the anesthesia involved and the complexity of the procedure, you will need to schedule a ride to and from your surgery. We also recommend that a friend or loved one stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery to assist with any household duties.
During Your Recovery
During the first few days of recovery, you are not required to remain in bed. Instead, we encourage you to walk around the house and complete everyday tasks to prevent blood clots from forming. However, you should not lift anything heavier than 10 to 15 pounds or perform any activity that places a strain on you incisions. When resting or sleeping, you should lie with your torso slightly elevated.
In about a week, you can return for a post-operative checkup. At this time, Dr. Robles can remove stitches and drain tubes and ensure you are recovering smoothly. Patients with sedentary jobs can usually return to work within a week. However, if you have a physically demanding job, you may have to wait two to three weeks before you can return. In most cases, incisions heal within two weeks.
Dr. Robles is available by cell phone 24 hours a day, seven days and week, and he encourages patients to contact him with any concerns about their recovery.
For the first two weeks following your procedure, you should arrange transportation. In addition, you should continue to wear your compression garment for at least three to six weeks. Most patients will need to wait at least six weeks before resuming strenuous activity.
After three weeks, swelling and bruising should begin to subside. As your body heals, the results of your procedure will become more apparent. Within three to six months, you can enjoy the final results of your tummy tuck, with a firmer, slimmer appearance and more youthful contours.
