More Information About Breast Augmentation
With the current focus being directed on overall well-being — including self esteem — it is very common to see patients at Robles Plastic Surgery in Phoenix (serving Scottsdale and Avondale) for consultations for breast augmentation. Breast augmentation surgery, or augmentation, mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the fullness, projection, and symmetry of the breasts. It involves inserting a silicone or saline breast implant under the breast gland and muscle or over the breast gland. The breast implant expands the breast area to give it a fuller size. If you are considering a breast augmentation, Dr. Robles can advise you on the options available for your treatment needs, the preparation involved, the budgetary constraints, and the benefits of each procedure.
Who Is a Candidate?
Breast augmentation is recommended for those who want to restore breast volume that was lost after weight fluctuations or following pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is also a good option to those who want to enlarge naturally small breast. However, breast augmentation cannot correct the appearance of breast that have drooped severely. If a patient wants the breast to look fuller because it has sagged, then a breast lift would have to be performed together with a breast augmentation. Patients must have realistic expectations and understand implants may need to be removed or replaced at some point after the procedure.
What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants?
Patients at Robles Plastic Surgery can choose from two types of breast implants when undergoing breast augmentation:
- Silicone filled breast implants: This type is filled with a soft, elastic silicone gel. Two types of silicone gel implants are available — high cohesive gel implants (Gummy Bear implants) and regular gel implants. The Gummy Bear implants have a more natural feel, and they stay intact even if the implant were to rupture. They also maintain their shape better and ripples formation is minimal to none. The regular gel implants are also good implants, but are being used less often.
- Saline breast implants: This type is filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants can be pre-filled to a size that you have agreed to during consultation or they can be filled by your plastic surgeon during the time of surgery so that minor adjustments can be made to the implant size, should there be a need for it.
How Is the Size of the Implants Determined?
Dr. Robles makes a thorough consultation with his patients to discuss what breast cup size the patient wishes to achieve. The process of determining what size implant is best for the patient involves the cup size desired by the patient, measurements of the breast, and the breast tissue anatomy. This process allows patients to actively participate in determining the breast implant size. Patients can try breast implant sizers during the consultation to see and feel what size they will be.
What Is a Breast Augmentation Procedure Like?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in an accredited outpatient surgery center, and the procedure typically lasts about 1.5 hours. General anesthesia is preferred, and newer anesthesia medication is used to minimize post-op dizziness and nausea. The incision may be made under the breast at the breast fold, at the edge of the areola, within the areola, or in the armpit to create a pocket. The breast implants are then inserted into the pockets, usually under the muscle, and positioned to achieve the best appearance and symmetry, after which, your doctor will close the wound using hidden stitches that do not need to be removed. Your doctor will also provide instructions on how to speed healing during recovery and will schedule a follow-up to check on how your wound is healing.
My biggest fear was having surgery. I have never gone under before. When first going in for my consultation I wasn't sure if I really could do it but the staff and my surgeon was so nice and informed me on every little concern I had. They really made me feel comfortable. Dr Robles was very professional and he did such a good job. My family was very impressed with everything as well, since they did go to most of my appointments with me. They will be going to him for there procedures as well. I would do it again 100 times if I had to. - Breast Augmentation Patient
