Learn More about Silicone Breast Implants

When undergoing breast augmentation with Dr. Ramon Robles, patients can choose to enhance their busts with either silicone or saline breast implants. In order to ensure he achieves the results you desire, Dr. Ramos will review the unique benefits of saline and silicone breast implants during a personal consultation at our Phoenix, AZ, practice. While neither type is considered the "best," the implants that are right for you will depend on several factors, including your goals and body type. The Benefits of Silicone Breast Implants

Mentor silicone breast implant logoSilicone breast implants feature a durable shell that is pre-filled with a thick silicone gel. Since the material is designed to closely mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue, many women choose silicone implants because they feel they offer the most lifelike results. Silicone implants are available in a range of sizes as well as shapes in order to help achieve the diverse goals of patients. When compared to saline types, silicone implants have a much lower risk of visible rippling.

Although there were previous concerns about the safety of silicone, extensive studies have shown that it does not pose a significant health risk to patients, which is why silicone breast implants received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2006. In order to be a candidate for silicone implants, you must be at least 22 years old. Dr. Robles will discuss the full benefits of silicone implants during the breast augmentation planning process to determine the type that can best achieve your goals.

Receiving Silicone Breast Implants

When you arrive at our practice for your breast augmentation procedure, we will begin by administering anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Next, Dr. Robles will carefully create incisions into your breasts, through which your implants will be inserted. The location of the incision will be carefully chosen based on several factors, and Dr. Robles will draw upon extensive training and experience to minimize the appearance of resulting scars.

Dr. Robles will then position each implant above (subglandular) or below (submuscular) the pectoral muscle. Subglandular placement is often chosen for women who are seeking a more prominent and noticeable enhancement, while submuscular placement is often chosen for more subtle results. The placement location of your implants will be determined during the planning process.

Many women choose silicone implants because they feel they offer the most lifelike results.

To complete your procedure, Dr. Robles will close up the incision with sutures. You may notice some swelling, discomfort, and bruising during this time, but these side effects typically fade in a few weeks. We will provide specific instructions for you to follow during your recovery, and most patients will need to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for the first six weeks.
