Women with overly large breasts often suffer from physical pain due to carrying extra weight. They may experience sore, irritated skin under their breasts, back and neck problems, and grooves in their shoulders from bra straps digging in. These women can also suffer from body image problems or low self-esteem, and they may have trouble trying to find clothes that fit them correctly. Physically healthy patients who have experienced any of these issues can be good candidates for breast reduction surgery.
If you decide to have breast reduction surgery, you will begin by consulting with Dr. Robles. He will explain the procedure to you in detail, going over the benefits and risks. You will discuss your expectations for the surgery and the goals you hope to achieve. The doctor will examine and measure your breasts, and photograph them for your medical record. He will create a customized treatment plan for you, detailing everything from anesthesia to recovery, then set a date for the surgery. The doctor and our staff will make themselves available to you 24 hours a day to address any questions or concerns before your surgery.
Breast reduction is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. There are several surgical techniques that Dr. Robles may use depending on your anatomy and preference and Dr. Robles’ advice. Each technique accesses the breast tissue through a different incision site, which determines the different locations of the scar. The scars are permanent, but they will fade over time. Through the incision, Dr. Robles removes excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue. He then repositions the nipple higher on the breast, reducing the size of the areola if necessary. Using sutures, he will reshape the smaller breasts and close the incisions. In most cases, the doctor will place drains to prevent fluid build-up and promote faster healing. The entire procedure takes approximately two hours. If he performs another procedure such as a breast lift at the same time, the surgery time will be increased.
You should expect to experience some pain for the first few days following surgery, and milder discomfort for a week or longer afterward. Dr. Robles can prescribe medications to alleviate any discomfort. You should also expect some swelling and bruising that may last for several weeks. Wearing a surgical bra can help reduce swelling and support the breasts during the healing period. You will need to refrain from too much physical activity for about a month. After approximately two weeks, you will return for a follow-up visit to have your sutures removed and allow the doctor to monitor your progress.
